Candle making has always been a very popular hobby and if you go back far enough in time, was even a necessity for a while. For the most parts, candles have always been made from the popular paraffin wax or beeswax. Lately, soy candles have been emerging as a viable alternative to the standard wax choices.

Soy candles are made out of 100% natural soy wax without any additives. Candles made of soy wax will have a wonderful aroma without having to add any type of fragrance. Experienced soy candle makers can mix the soy wax in several ways that will give the natural scent a bit of a difference, and that is, make the scent fainter or more powerful.

The unusual thing about soy candles is that they can be made with or without wicks. Those with wicks are used the same way as any regular candle out there. Wickless soy candles need to be used with electric candle warmers. The candle warmer is plugged into a nearby electrical outlet which warms the plate. You then place the candle on the warm plate and its warmth will cause the candle to give off its sweet fragrance.

These wickless soy candles are very safe since there is no exposed flame which can start a fire. That is why these are good to be used in places where the candles could be accidentally left unattended. Many offices and dorm rooms have put a ban on burning candles for this reason, but they often do allow the wickless candles using the burners.

Most candle makers who have tried soy wax are very happy with the results. Soy has a wonderful natural scent and has a very smooth glossy finish. It is not necessary to add additives to soy wax as you often have to with paraffin and beeswax. The additives for those types of wax are for hardness and gloss. Soy wax offers both on its own.

Believe it or not, soy wax is cheaper than other types of wax. If you are on a tight budget, using soy wax is the way to go. You will save money on the wax and you won't need to purchase additives or scents. This means if you are planning to make soy candles to sell, you can make a higher profit because your costs are lower. The best way to experiment with soy wax candles is to buy a soy wax candle making kit online for less than $20. It comes with all the supplies you need to make five candles, including the jars and lids.

Many people enjoy the scent of a burning candle, but find the smoke from them quite irritating. This is especially true of individuals who are on oxygen, have bronchitis, or even allergy sufferers. Since soy wax is all natural, no smoke or irritants will burn off the candle. This makes soy wax candles a great alternative for the many who otherwise wouldn't be able to enjoy using candles.

Candle making is an excellent craft that many individuals enjoy both as a hobby and as a home business. Soy wax is not a very commonly used wax but works just as well as other waxes for candle making. In fact it has many benefits that are often not considered by the novice, namely, it is less expensive, very easy to work with, and melts fast, reducing the time to make them. The only drawback is its availability. Soy wax is not carried in all craft stores, but can easily be purchased on line in amounts from three pounds to fifty pounds. The more you buy, the less you will pay per pound, giving you additional savings.
